Department of Consumer Protection collaborates on statewide "September Shred” events for the public

While consumers understand that tossing personal information containing social security numbers, bank account numbers and other information into the trash is an invitation for identity thieves, most personal shredding machines can’t quickly handle large volumes of paper, so the Department of Consumer Protection is collaborating with Shred-It to offer free bulk shredding to the public on Saturday, September 13th.

“We’re giving consumers the chance to clean out their closets, attics and basements and safely get rid of unnecessary documents such as old utility bills, outdated insurance policies and check stubs, and any unneeded papers that include credit account numbers, social security numbers, or medical or legal information,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr., said. “I’m grateful that Shred-It is offering free support, and I applaud the Better Business Bureau and other groups and businesses that offer these free community events as well.”

Commissioner Farrell and Better Business Bureau of CT President and CEO Paulette Hotton held a joint press conference at the Wallingford Senior Center today to describe a number of free shredding events and identity theft programs that their organizations are sponsoring in September.

The Department of Consumer Protection will hold six shredding sites around the state on Saturday, September 13th in collaboration with Shred-It of Connecticut. Consumers can bring up to three large trash bags or three large cartons of unneeded papers to large Shred-It trucks stationed – rain or shine -- at the following locations between 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. where the items will be shredded onsite at no cost.

• Manchester Community College Lot C
• Wallingford Senior Center
• Commuter Lot off I-95 @ Route 79 (Exit 61), Madison

The Better Business Bureau of Connecticut will host similar shredding events along with identity theft prevention tips on September 20th at Wal-Mart, 315 Foxon Boulevard in New Haven and at The Dock Shopping Plaza, 955 Ferry Boulevard in Stratford. Visit www.bbb.org for more information.
