HARTFORD, June 20 – Inspectors from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection are visiting Wal-Mart stores, conducting recall effectiveness checks in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s voluntary recall on June 19, 2008 of “Hip Charm” Key Chains manufactured in China and distributed by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., of Bentonville, Arkansas. The key chains were sold exclusively at Wal-Mart Stores nationwide from April 2005 through June 2008 for approximately .50 cents to $6.00. The charms on the key chain, contain excessive levels of lead.
The recalled key chains have “Hip Charm” and the following UPC numbers printed on the packaging: 03156811032, 03156811029, 03156811019, 03156811016, 03156811018, 03156811028, and 03156811030. The charms hang from a silver colored chain with several charms such as a heart, clover, leaf and a button. (See photos below).
Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. urged consumers to check their homes for this product and if found, return it to any Wal-Mart, for a full refund. Do not let children handle this key chain due to the high lead levels. Although no injuries have been reported, the potential for lead exposure to children is high.
