Danbury's One Book, One Community program to begin October 1
By Press Release
Sep 23, 2008 - 2:06 PM

John Kline, CEO and president of Union Savings Bank, presents Danbury Library Director Mark Hasskarl with a $2,000 check which will be used to help fund the One book One Community program happening in Danbury this fall.
Danbury's One Book, One Community program -- which encourages the Greater Danbury community to read the same book during the fall of 2008 then come together to discuss it at venues throughout the region -- will kick off reading and discussion of author Jhumpra Lahri's The Namesake on October 1.

Although many communities across America sponsor similar programs, this is one of the few where a city public library (The Danbury Public Library), a public school system (Danbury Public Schools) and a university (Western Connecticut State University have formed a partnership for this initiative. Sponsors include Friends of the Danbury Library, Union Savings Bank, Branson, Savings Bank of Danbury, La Tribuna, The NewsTimes, El Canillita and Yankee Pennysaver.

The Namesake takes the Ganguli family from their tradition-bound life in Calcutta through their transformation into Americans. On the heels of an arranged marriage, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle in Cambridge, Mass., where Ashoke does his best to adapt while his wife pines for home. When their son, Gogol, is born, the task of naming him reveals the troublesome results of bringing old ways to the new world.

Copies of the book may be borrowed from the Danbury Public Library or purchased at Borders Books & Music and Barnes & Noble.
