Consumers alerted about children’s cribs

Department of Consumer Protection inspectors are visiting stores in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s voluntary recall of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards Cribs and Baby Appleseed Cribs due to fall hazards. The recalled cribs do not meet the minimum 26 inch minimum height, thus allowing children inside the crib to crawl over the railing, posing a fall hazard. The recalled products are as follows:

*Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards Cribs were manufactured in Toronto, Canada. There were sold nationwide at juvenile product stores from March 2006 through March 2008, for approximately $500 to $650. Recalled cribs include the following: “Enchantment” (model #210), “Hush a Bye” (model #215), “Once Upon a Time” (model #320) and “Rock a Bye” (model #1900-350). The model number and date code are printed on a label located on the bottom inside on the right. The date codes from 0306 through 0308 are included in this recall. Consumers should cease using this product immediately and contact Mother Hubbard’s Cupboards to receive instructions on how to re-install the support brackets to eliminate the hazard.

*Baby Appleseed cribs were manufactured in Vietnam and imported by Baby Appleseed, of City of Industry, California. They were sold nationwide at specialty juvenile stores from December 2006 through September 2007, for approximately $600 to $800. The Davenport crib model involved in this recall includes only model numbers beginning with 273 and which have manufacturing dates on or before August 2007. Newer Davenport cribs with model numbers beginning with 244 are NOT included in this recall. The hazard exists when the crib is in the third lowest position, so consumers should cease using that position immediately and contact Baby Appleseed to receive a repair kit. The company states that the repair kits will be available in mid-August 2008. Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr., urged consumers who own these cribs to cease using the cribs and contact the appropriate company to receive further instructions and/or repair kits. Although no injuries or incidents have been reported, the potential for injury is high.
