Cruise along the Long Island Sound with your friends on the St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound 6th annual Sunset Sail. The Sail takes place Saturday, September 13th from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. aboard the Port Jefferson/Bridgeport Ferry. All proceeds from the Sunset Sail will benefit the SWIM's Breast Cancer programs, which include mobile mammography screenings, breast cancer support groups and assistance to patients battling breast cancer and their families.

The three-and-a-half-hour celebration includes an array of catered dishes, wine and beer, great raffles and a beautiful view of the Sound at sunset. Passengers will be taken along the Connecticut coast and out into open water as day turns into night. Live music and dancing will provide entertainment for passengers on the top deck.

Kathy Young, chair of the Sunset Sail, is looking forward to another successful fundraiser. "The Sunset Sail is a fun SWIM event," said Young. "All you need to do is sit back, relax and enjoy great company and beautiful scenery."

Last year, the Sunset Sail raised more than $40,000 for breast cancer programs. Tickets for the adults-only event are $50 (must be 21 years or older) and must be purchased in advance. Please RSVP by Wednesday, September 3, 2008.

For more information or to purchase tickets, contact St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation at (203) 576-5451 or visit www.swimacrossthesound.org.

St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound

St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound is a charitable, grass roots organization run by St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation. For 21 years, the SWIM has had a unique niche, providing cancer education, screening and prevention programs at low- or no-cost for the elderly and underserved. In addition, the SWIM helps individual cancer patients on a case-by-case basis with specific needs, such as the funding of wigs and prostheses, medication assistance, free transportation to treatments and appointments, day-care scholarships and support groups. The SWIM raises funds through events such as the SWIM Marathon, Breast Cancer Luncheon, Walk/Run for Cancer and Diabetes and Prostate Cancer Celebrity Dinner. Wherever possible, the SWIM covers costs and expenses of events through corporate sponsorships, and staffing overhead is covered by the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation. The SWIM’s main area of reach is eastern Fairfield County, but outreach programs extend to other areas of Connecticut with the SWIM’s Hartford Chapter and annual fund raisers for New Haven County, as well as support for Connecticut’s first responders and correction officers and their families with cancer. The SWIM’s Teen SmokeStoppers program has reached 100,000 children throughout the entire state to date. The SWIM raised $2.65 million in the 2008 fiscal year and helps more than 20,000 people annually.
