Product Safety Inspectors from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection are conducting recall effectiveness checks on retail establishments in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s voluntary recall of “Casper the Friendly Ghost Halloween Mini-Figurines,” due to high levels of lead. This product was manufactured in China and imported by Coyne’s & Company Inc., of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The recalled Halloween figurines, stand approximately three (3) inches tall and are made out of resin and paper. They were sold in mini-bags with a spider and web design. Casper the Friendly Ghost figurines are dressed in a variety of costumes such as: Skeleton in a green spider bag, Dracula in a red spider bag, Devil in a purple spider bag, Wendy the Witch in a yellow spider bag and a Mummy in an orange spider bag. The figurines are stamped with TM & Harvey Ent. Printed on a white sticker on the bottom of the bags are “Coyne’s & Company” and “CP1030”. This product was sold nationwide at Gift, specialty, card and drug stores from June 2005 to September 2008 for approximately $1.00 to $3.00.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. said, “This Casper the Friendly Ghost, is not very friendly when it comes to our children. These figurines contain high levels of lead in the paint. Lead is known to produce severe health effects, especially in children.” The Commissioner strongly recommends parents check for this product in their household, if found, immediately remove from their children’s possession and contact Coyne’s & Company for a full refund or credit. For additional information, call Coyne’s Company anytime at (800) 336-8666 or visit their website at www.coynes.com . Although no injuries have been reported, the potential for lead exposure is high.
