Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz announced today that since the June 10, 2008 launch of “¡Tu Voto Si Cuenta!” (Your Vote Does Count!) more than 5,800 Latinos have registered to vote. This news comes as record numbers of Connecticut residents are continuing to register to vote.

“Our nonpartisan effort to register 10,000 new Latino voters has been a rousing success,” said Bysiewicz. “Latinos in Connecticut clearly want a say in the direction of our country. Not only are we going to reach our campaign’s goal on November 4th I predict Latinos will head to the polls in great numbers this presidential year.”

The Office of the Secretary of the State has established eleven volunteer committees in targeted cities across Connecticut. Over the course of the last 3 months, the committees have conducted a wide range of grassroots voter registration drives.

Next month the non-partisan “¡Tu Voto Si Cuenta!” campaign will mount an aggressive media campaign (radio, print, and television) targeting the Spanish speaking market. It will encourage voter participation, provide significant voter education on using the new optical scan voting technology, and offer information on voter rights and proper forms of identification for registering and voting.

Secretary Bysiewicz also reported that Connecticut’s year long surge in voter registration has picked-up steam during the summer months. Since July 25, 2008 more than 24,000 Connecticut residents registered to vote.

Among newly registered (since January 1, 2008) voters nearly 58,000 Democrats and 17,000 Republicans registered to vote. Additionally, 49,049 unaffiliated voters registered. Of the nearly 124,391 newly registered voters, more than 57,000 are between the ages of 18 and 29. Since January 1, 2008 among newly registered younger voters, Democratic registration has outpaced Republican registration: 26,380 to 7,813. Currently, there are 1,942,524 registered voters in Connecticut.

“In 2008, young people, more than ever, may be the deciding factor in determining the course of our country for years to come,” said Bysiewicz. “Indeed, we are seeing record numbers of young people register to vote; more than any other age group in Connecticut this year. What it says to me is that in this time of war, economic uncertainty and environmental peril, our future leaders our engaged in the political process, they care about the future of this country and they are committed to making their voices heard.”

The Office of the Secretary of the State maintains an aggressive voter registration program working closely with community groups, high schools, universities and others to expand civic involvement among Connecticut residents. As part of her effort to increase voter registration in Connecticut, Secretary Bysiewicz this past year registered nearly 3,000 high school students. She has also conducted more than 200 voting machine demonstrations highlighting the new machines and registering voters. The Office of the Secretary of the State regularly registers new citizens to vote at naturalization ceremonies across Connecticut.
