Bike MS ride rounds the corner in race for a cure
Vernon resident and Cardio Express Gyms owner Peter Rusconi crosses the Mohegan Sun finish line at the 2007 Bike MS event in September. Rusconi's Bike MS: Mohegan Sun Ride, presented by Cardio Express team, which will take part in the Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28 ride, expects to raise $100,000 to ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter is shifting into high gear as it prepares to host the Bike MS: Mohegan Sun Ride 2008, presented by Cardio Express Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28.

The ride begins and ends at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. Participants can opt to complete a 25-, 50- or 75-mile route each day. Routes wind through Southeastern Connecticut’s breathtaking shoreline and countryside. A finish-line celebration at Mohegan Sun will feature food, music and massage therapy.

This year the event will feature a new overnight location, Camp Hazen in Chester, Conn., where cyclists will enjoy meals, games and a lakeside beer- and wine-tasting event. Camp Hazen is surrounded by a beautiful lake, open fields and groomed pathways through the woods, with cabins well-placed around the perimeter.

The “Ticket to Ride” program is back for its second year after incredible success in the 2007 ride. This year each paid registrant is eligible to bring three new riders for free. The $80 registration fee will be waived for each new rider. Participants will still be required to meet the $300 fundraising minimum.

“We are about six weeks away from the tour and are already on our way to another record-breaking year,” said Amanda Barry, Senior Development Specialist. “We are thrilled with the success of the Ticket To Ride program again this year and excited about our new overnight location.”

Over the past 13 years more than 1,600 cyclists have pedaled farther than 200,000 miles to raise about $850,000.

Multiple sclerosis is a potentially debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause is unknown and, as a result, there currently is no cure. Funds raised through chapter events, such as the Bike MS: Mohegan Sun Ride, presented by Cardio Express, ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS.

Register at www.ctfightsMS.org. The registration fee is $80; there is a $300 fundraising minimum per rider. All meals and the overnight stay are included.
