Finding the local library and doing research on state history may not be a tough assignment for local students, but finding what you are looking for when you are not a native English speaker, are unfamiliar with the ins and outs of town and you only have two hours… is a whole other story. A group of Westport au pairs were up to the challenge recently during a scavenger hunt sponsored by Cultural Care Au Pair starting at the New York Public Library in mid-town Manhattan. Together they proved that looking for a needle in a haystack can be a whole lot of fun.

The au pairs, currently living with families in Westport, joined over two-hundred of their peers from the tri-state area for a crash course in local geography and history. Together representing countries such as Australia, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, Panama, Belgium, Norway, Finland, the au pairs are currently all living with American host families as part of Cultural Care Au Pair’s cultural exchange and childcare program.

The face-paced two hour scavenger hunt was a team event; the winning team decided by a final tally of odds and ends and correct trivia questions.

“I have always felt that the best way to orient yourself in a new place is to grab a map and hit the ground running!” said Kris Seymour, local childcare coordinator for Cultural Care Au Pair. “The au pairs learned some U.S. and state history, they visited some local businesses, and hopefully they realized how lucky they are to live in such a friendly city. For a lot of them, this will inevitably be a favorite memory when their year in the United States is over.”
