Calling the results “disappointing,” Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. reported today on the outcome of a series of alcohol compliance checks conducted in Glastonbury on Saturday April 24th, where 12 stores were cited for making unlawful sales of alcohol to a minor.

“We routinely conduct these alcohol compliance checks in towns statewide to help us identify licensed or permitted locations that may be selling alcoholic beverages to minors,” Farrell said. “We were disappointed to find so many of the Glastonbury stores did sell to the 18 year old. We expect that additional contact and education with Glastonbury permittees is warranted.”

The undercover compliance checks were held on Saturday beginning at 1:00pm. State liquor control agents working with officers from the Glastonbury Police Department and an 18-year old volunteer provided by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, visited all package stores and grocery stores in Glastonbury that sell beer. Of the 14 stores tested, 12 failed by selling to the undercover 18 year old volunteer.

“In no way do we try to trick or entice establishments to sell alcoholic beverages to youth,” Farrell said. “If asked for proof of age before making a liquor purchase, the volunteer youths will hand over their actual ID. Our objective is to find those businesses that are selling to minors and bring them into compliance with state law. We thank the Glastonbury Police Department and the Prevention Partnership for their cooperation and support in this effort.

The establishments that failed Saturday’s compliance check are:

· Country Store, 2187 New London Tpke.

· Stop & Shop Supermarket #631, 215 Glastonbury Rd.

· Stop & Shop Supermarket, 55 Oak St.

· Whole Foods Market, 55 Welles Street

· One Stop Spirit Shop, 339 New London Tpke.

· Blue Heron Fine Wine & Spirits, 124 Hebron Ave.

· Addison Fine Wine & Spirits, 800 Hebron Ave.

· Sonoma Wines and Spirits, 30 Wells St.

· Corks Fine Wine & Spirits, 1320 Manchester Rd.

· Charles Fine Wine, 2283 Main St.

· Buck's Corner Spirit Shoppe, 2249 New London Tpke. Unit C

· O'Riley's Wine & Spirits, 960 New London Tpke.

The two stores that passed by not selling to the undercover minor are Southside Wine and Spirit at 1 Water Street and M & R Package Store at 2773 Main Street.

Each store charged with selling liquor to a minor will be brought before the Liquor Control Commission for an administrative hearing, at which time the store will have the opportunity to address the charges.
