It’s summer, but Fred Poulos no longer cooks burgers or ties up boats. He is still busy though. Fred, the former owner of Fred’s Shanty and Thamesport Marina is once again busy organizing his 5th annual “Walk with Fred” Parkinson Research Walk to be held September 28th at 10:00 am at Ocean Beach in New London. The 2.2 mile walk is held to raise money to fund research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Disorders (IND). IND is an independent medical research facility in New Haven staffed by scientists who are on the cutting edge of development of the latest tools for early diagnosis and improving treatments for Parkinson disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and multiple sclerosis. Scientists believe that early diagnosis holds the key to slowing, reversing or stopping these diseases.
This year’s walk is being dedicated to the memory of Dave Waddington who passed away earlier this year. Once restaurant rivals, Fred and Dave (originator of Dad’s restaurant in Niantic) were always friends. Dave’s enthusiasm and organizational skills were instrumental in helping to get “Walk with Fred” off the ground and running. In 2004, Dave, who was also known as “Mr. Magic”, generously donated his time to stage a show to help raise money for Parkinson’s research.
Fred’s retirement was accelerated by the problems that come to those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease. Diagnosed over ten years ago, Fred found it increasingly difficult to cope with the physical demands of his business. However, he is fully committed to raise money to fund Parkinson’s research. For several years he participated in clinical trials at IND and is proud to have served on the Board of Directors for the past five years. IND is a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax deductible.
The walk-a-thon plays an important role in the fight for a cure. Fred’s walks have raised over $150,000 for Parkinson research and Fred wants to continue that tradition in 2008. Sponsorships are available at many levels. Fred hopes you can help by joining him at the walk or donate to the cause.
