Bysiewicz Reports 102 Women Running for General Assembly Seats

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz reported that this year there are 102 women running for Connecticut General Assembly seats. The 102 candidates represent the highest number over the last 10 years.

“In Connecticut, 2008 is turning out to be the year of the woman,” said Bysiewicz. “This year, the number of women running for the General Assembly has hit triple digits. In the 1970’s, Ella Grasso shattered Connecticut’s glass ceiling; the women running this year are continuing in that tradition of adding important ideas and perspective to the political process.”

Over the last 10 years, the total number of women seeking General Assembly seats has increased dramatically. In the last decade, four out of the last five election cycles has witnessed an increase in the total number of women running for the General Assembly. This year, 14 women are candidates for State Senate and 88 women are candidates for State Representative.

“It is great news that more women are running for office,” said Secretary Bysiewicz. “Both major political parties, the Women’s Campaign School at Yale University, and the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) deserve credit for their work in recruiting women.”

# of Female Candidates By Year:

2008: 102

2006: 99

2004: 91

2000: 74

1998: 83

The idea that women are running for state office to represent their communities in such high numbers is outstanding,” commented Teresa Younger, Executive Director of the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women. “More voices and places at the table will strongly influence Connecticut’s policy agenda moving forward. The PCSW supports all women engaging in civic activities to promote their voices to be seen and heard.”
