NORWALK, CT — The Norwalk Transit District, in collaboration with the City of Norwalk, has initiated a study of the city-owned South Norwalk train station to provide a functional, cost-effective, fully integrated Intermodal Transportation Center in the City of Norwalk at the existing railroad station. The firm of Wendel Duchscherer Architects & Engineers, P.C. has been hired to undertake the 8-month study.

The study will examine existing conditions at the station and its immediate environs and identify opportunities to upgrade existing facilities and create better connections to other forms of transportation – bus and bicycle, taxi, kiss and ride, shuttles and airport limousines – as well as improve the pedestrian connections in and around the South Norwalk train station.

Louis Schulman, Administrator of the Norwalk Transit District, said the federally funded study “offers a great opportunity to improve facilities at the train station and improve transportation choices for city residents by creating linkages between all the ways people travel – by auto, bus, shuttle, rail, bicycle and walking.”

The study will be guided by a Study Advisory Committee comprised of representatives from the City of Norwalk’s Departments of Planning, Public Works and Finance, Norwalk Transit District, Norwalk Redevelopment Authority, Norwalk Housing Authority, Second Taxing District and South Western Regional Planning Agency. Attorney Andrew Glickson, one of the directors of the Norwalk Transit District serves as Chairman of the committee.

An extensive public involvement program is planned with outreach to the SoNo neighborhood, commuters, local businesses and city residents. A series of four listening sessions have been scheduled in June. Meetings will be held on:

• Wednesday, June 4, NEON Multi-purpose Room, Main Floor, 98 South Main Street, Norwalk, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
• Thursday, June 5, South Norwalk Train Station, Norwalk, 6:00 – 9:00 a.m.
• Tuesday, June 10, SoNo Alliance Meeting, Community Room, South Norwalk Police Station, One Monroe Street, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
• Monday, June 23, Coalition of Norwalk Community Associations, Norwalk City Hall, Room A322, Norwalk, 7:30 – 9: 30 p.m.

The consultant team will utilize information gathered from community meetingsand other data collection efforts to develop draft alternatives to improve the station area. The public will have an opportunity for review and comment on the proposed draft alternatives at a public meeting schedule for Tuesday, July 22, Norwalk City Hall Community Room 125, East Avenue, Norwalk, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
