Sen. Duff, Mayor Moccia: Bridge work won’t affect weekend Boat Show, concert

Norwalk - State Senator Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) and Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia today announced that the state Department of Transportation (DOT) will delay maintenance work to the Stroffolino Bridge in order to prevent traffic problems for this weekend’s Sounds of SoNo concert and the Norwalk In-Water Boat Show.

Concerns had been raised over the potential for significant traffic back-ups and problems on Washington Street if the bridge were closed for painting this weekend. At the Mayor Moccia’s asking, Senator Duff requested that the DOT postpone their work to prevent problems in South Norwalk. The DOT will honor that request.

“This was a cooperative effort between the city, the state and the Department of Transportation, and I’m grateful to the DOT for taking this request seriously and acting in the city’s best interest in this situation,” said Senator Duff. “Residents will be able to enjoy the events in Norwalk this weekend without worrying that maintenance to the Stroffolino Bridge is going to cause a problem in the area.”

“I appreciate the flexibility exhibited by the Department of Transportation in responding to our request to delay for one week the necessary bridge work,” said Mayor Moccia. “The decision will make this weekend’s Sounds of SoNo concert and the Boat Show much more accessible and hospitable. And I wish to thank Senator Duff for teaming up with me to make the request and obtain the excellent response.”

The Stroffolino Bridge spans the Norwalk River, connecting South Norwalk and East Norwalk. The painting of the bridge is the final state of Phase II rehabilitation to the bridge, which has also included fixing the pier bumpers and renovating the bridge control room. During the first phase, the bridge deck and support steel were replaced.

Last weekend, the DOT delayed painting the bridge due to inclement weather. The DOT intends to reschedule the painting for either the weekend of September 27 or of October 4.
