Through a year-round effort of planning, organizing and fundraising, the Red Apple committee of local volunteers creates one of the "must see and be seen" society events of the year. This year Norwalk, Wilson Point residents Gina and Alex Ely are co-chairs, along with New Canaan's Lynn and Tom Quinn. Other Norwalk citizens active on the Red Apple committee include: Eric Blattman, chairman for the live auction, Barbara and Jeff Erdmann, Barbara is co-chair for the silent auction and Lizanne Megrue, all of Wilson Point and Jessica Fogg of South Norwalk. In accomplishing a very serious mission, committee members also manage to create a wonderful society evening, Herring said. Held throughout the Aquarium's exhibits, a cocktail hour starts the event. Guests are treated to exotic food and drink stations. Musicians of many styles from jazz to African drums entertain them. Next is a sit-down dinner arranged around the Aquarium's seals and stingrays. Between courses they are entertained by an awards presentation including a touching video describing the very important educational opportunities created by Red Apple guests' generosity. Live and silent auctions provide more fun, and fundraising. Hot items include a wine connoisseur's dinner, tickets to the Letterman TV show and a weekend getaway to Mexico. Theme of the event this year is "The Red Apple Goes Green" in recognition of the urgent need to inspire children, and their families, about conservation and care of Long Island Sound. Keeping with the "green theme," honored at this year's Red Apple Dinner will be Nell Newman and Newman's Own Organics: The Second Generation. Nell is personally involved in creating an organic dinner complimented by sustainable seafood. Also honored for "green initiatives" is GE Commercial Finance for its leadership in forging new approaches to climate change and commitment to the education of local children, Herring said. Supporting sponsors of the Ninth Annual Red Apple Awards Dinner this year are Fairfield County Bank and Xerox Foundation. Contributing sponsors are Bob Becker Communications, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, Diageo, Philip Stone Caterers and TFI | envision, Inc. Honorary Chairs are Governor M. Jodi Rell and James Naughton. Naughton also serves as Master of Ceremonies. Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele and his wife Carol will attend this year, representing Gov. Rell. A limited number of seats are still available for this event, Thursday, April 24, 6 to 9:30 p.m. Contact Development Director Chris Larsen right away to get a spot at the Red Apple gala, including cocktail hour in the exhibit galleries, dinner in Aquarium halls, live and silent auctions and more.
