Playhouse on the Green will initiate “From Page to Stage,” a new play reading and works-in-progress series, with a comedy/mystery on January 27 and a musical on February 17. The series will include a talk-back after each presentation with the author and director.

The first two plays in the series are “The Case of the Curious Condiment,” an Agatha Christie parody written and directed by Jack Rushen of Stratford, on Sunday, January 27 at 7 p.m., and “ME ME ME ME!,” a one-man opera written and composed by Jed Wolf of Fairfield and directed by award-winning actress, writer and director E. Katherine Kerr, on Sunday, February 17 at 7 p.m.

Mark Graham, Playhouse on the Green acting co-artistic director, said,” There are so many interesting plays and theatrical works that have come to our attention from local playwrights and composers that we felt Playhouse on The Green should create an opportunity to showcase these works.”

In “The Case of the Curious Condiment,” an English matriarch plans a soiree, only to be tipped off that a murder will be committed that evening. This brings together a lusty adulteress, her secretly gay husband, a wisecracking butler, a beautiful ingénue and an old Colonel who can talk about very little except the production of mustard. When one is murdered, they call in a verbose but clueless police inspector who is more interested in hearing himself talk than solving a crime.

Playwright Jack Rushen describes his play as “a mixture of surprise, laughter, and parody. A combination of Oscar Wilde and Agatha Christie, with a little "Monty Python" thrown in thrown in.”

“ME ME ME ME!,” an eccentric and exciting one-man opera, is about a quirky inventor who tries to market his beloved inventions in an indifferent world. This hilariously touching tale is based on the author’s actual experiences with a reality TV program about inventions. Jed Wolf has composed a memorable score with songs that fill the stage like an entire musical cast.

No reservations are required. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. A contribution of $10 is suggested.

Playhouse on the Green is a 228-seat, state-of-the-art theatre. Originating in 1954 as the Polka Dot Playhouse located in Stratford's Redman's Hall, the theatre had several homes before moving in 1967 to Pleasure Beach, an island off Bridgeport. In 1996, access to the Playhouse was cut off when the connecting bridge to Pleasure Beach burned down. With support of People's Bank and the State of Connecticut, the Polka Dot Playhouse reopened in 1999 in a renovated, former bank building in the heart of downtown Bridgeport. In 2002, the name changed to Playhouse on the Green, reflecting its location on McLevy Green, accessible to nearby restaurants and parking. The new theatre initiative will produce a season of professionally enhanced stage plays, musicals, new play readings and educational and children's programming.

Playhouse on the Green is located at 177 State Street, Bridgeport. Free parking available.
