(Norwalk, CT) Nell Newman, president of Newman’s Own Organics: The Second Generation, is an honoree of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s Ninth Annual Red Apple Awards Dinner, to be held April 24. Newman’s Own Organics and the Newman family are long-standing supporters of environmental education initiatives of The Maritime Aquarium. Newman’s Own is also acknowledged for its strong commitment to sustainable agriculture for a healthy ecosystem, Aquarium President Jennifer Herring said. “This fits well with the Aquarium’s new sustainable seafood initiative,” she added.
This year the Aquarium’s Red Apple committee decided to turn their red apple green, focusing on the urgent need to inspire children, and their families, about conservation and care of Long Island Sound. The “Red Apple” part of the name acknowledges the annual fundraising event’s role in supporting educational opportunities. Funded in part by the Red Apple, the Aquarium delivers hands-on science and environmental education to more than 130,000 students per year; making these programs available to schools and students, who otherwise would not be able to afford them, Herring explained.
Newman caught the green theme and helped make sure it extended all the way to the evening’s dinner menu. Working with the Aquarium’s in-house Philip Stone Caterers, Nell Newman arranged for an organic salad with Newman’s Own organic dressing. She also helped arrange for the main course: a duet of organic, free range, breast of chicken, pan roasted and stuffed with goat cheese and arugala with roasted tomato sauce; paired with oreganata baked barramundi fish fillet, a sustainable seafood. A vegetarian option will also be offered. The superb dinner reflects Newman’s Own Organics’ company motto, “great tasting products that happen to be organic.”
Nell Newman is daughter of actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Nell’s commitment to organic foods and sustainable agriculture led her to convince her father to let her establish an organic division of Newman’s Own. She won him over by creating a completely organic Thanksgiving dinner, then suggesting organic food products for the Newman’s Own line.
“All of Newman’s Own products are ones that Dad enjoys, so we choose ones that he really loves,” said Nell. She credits her parents, too, with teaching her by example to be socially responsible, politically involved and philanthropic.
Keeping with the “green theme,” also honored at this year’s Red Apple Dinner will be GE Commercial Finance for its leadership in forging new approaches to climate change and commitment to the education of local children, Herring said.
