Craig Machado, the director of the Norwalk Community College ESL Division has received a Fulbright Specialist award in the area of Teachers of English of a Foreign Language (TEFL)/Applied Linguistics which qualifies him to bid on short term projects around the world for a period of five years.

He recently won a project that will take him to the Escuela Agricol Panamericana in Honduras next fall. He will be working with the Centro de Idiomas (CDI) at the school to help them imporve the bilingual (English/Spanish) capability o their students. All students study English there.

Machado reports that the school, which is located in Zamorano, about 40 miles from the capital of Tegucigalpa, “… offers four engineering programs on the bachelor’s level aimed at meeting the challenges and opportunities in sustainable management of natural resources and the environment; rural transformation to reduce poverty, and global competitiveness of small and large regional agribusiness.”

His project will follow a previous Fulbright specialist who did an English program assessment at the Escuela Agricol Panamericana last year. He will spend a month in Zamorano, living on campus, working with English faculty and students to help them reach greater proficiency in English. Planned activities include workshops, teacher training sessions, internet-based learning curricular review, content-based learning modules and new ways of language assessment beyond traditional standardized tests.

Machado states that “… this is a great opportunity to learn more about Honduras, as well as meet and interact with students and faculty from a respected private university in Latin America. It also moves NCC further along the road of international education and outreach.”
