Norwalk CT, June 5, 2008 – On Wednesday, June 11, Mayor Richard A. Moccia is hosting a reception to celebrate a momentous event, the 80th birthday of the YMCA of Norwalk.
From 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Community Room of the Norwalk City Hall, invited guests will have an opportunity to meet CEO Cynthia Armijo who has been leading the YMCA since February. “I’ve been spending time getting to know the people in this community and it will be a pleasure to see many of them again,” says Armijo. “It’s also likely that I’ll have a chance to meet even more of the folks who are important to this city.”
According to YMCA of Norwalk board member Jody Neaderland, who is serving as the event chair, the Y is grateful for the Mayor’s continued commitment to the Association. “Mayor Moccia has demonstrated his support of the YMCA in many ways over the years. It is quite meaningful to us all that the first celebration to mark the 80th birthday of our YMCA is being hosted by the Mayor of the community we serve.”
For his part, the Mayor is happy to help. “The YMCA of Norwalk has been a constant in our community for eight decades, providing programs that focus on caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. There’s no doubt that the good works of this organization have had a significant and positive impact on the quality of life in this city.”
“As a charitable organization serving a public purpose,” says Armijo, “the YMCA of Norwalk is dedicated to meeting the needs of the people who live and work in Norwalk – through programs for children and teens, activities for adults and seniors, childcare services for pre-schoolers and school-age children and financial assistance for its neighbors in need.”
To that last point, Armijo notes that the reception is also intended to serve as a fundraising event. “Because we are looking forward to serving the people of Norwalk for another eighty years, I’ve been focused on driving the growth and development of the Association.” But the YMCA of Norwalk still relies on donor support. Armijo says, “Hopefully our guests will take this opportunity to contribute to the future of the YMCA of Norwalk.”
