The City of Norwalk and the Norwalk Arts Commission join thousands of arts organizations and communities across the nation in celebrating National Arts and Humanities Month throughout October. The Norwalk Arts Commission will carry this message to the people of Norwalk through activities that honor the efforts of artists, historians, teachers, and cultural groups working to make the arts and humanities a part of everyone’s life.

Mayor Richard Moccia will be presenting a proclamation to the Norwalk Arts Commission at the press conference scheduled later this week on Wednesday, October 8th at 1 PM at the Flow of Art Gallery located at 16 River Street.

Mayor Moccia said, “We all recognize the creative and cultural value of the arts and humanities. National Arts and Humanities Month offers us a chance to celebrate the often overlooked benefit and the intrinsic educational and community value to developing and engaging the creative economy and the impact that the arts have in our daily lives. There is nothing more important than supporting activities that encourage creativity and innovative skills in order to compete in the 21st century global workplace.”

The Norwalk Arts Commission has played a very active roll in engaging the community in arts related activities, most recently with the roll out of the Norwalk ArtWalk Map, the implementation of the monthly ArtSpot events and the quarterly ArtScape Publication as well as working closely with the diverse artistic and cultural community that Norwalk is known for. Jackie Lightfield echoed the national sentiment, “Everyone in the community is encouraged to participate in what has become this country’s largest annual collective celebration of the arts and humanities. We encourage all organizations including the business community to work together and participate in the awareness of the arts and humanities and incorporate these activities into their daily lives and their organizations.”

National Arts and Humanities Month is coordinated through the Americans for the Arts. Their mission is to empower communities with the resources and support necessary to provide access to all of the arts for all of the people. This month-long celebration grew out of National Arts Week, which was begun in 1985 by the National Endowment for the Arts and Americans for the Arts. With 48 years of service, Americans for the Arts is dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts.
