Joan Shaw to head membership at CHJ

Joan Shaw of Norwalk, known as a friendly and conscientious “people person” was elected as the new Membership Chair at the recent Annual Meeting (also held in Norwalk) of the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ), filling a position previously headed by a team of five Co-Membership Chair people.

“I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for CHJ with prospective members.” she said.

Mrs. Shaw has served CHJ in many capacities, including former Membership Chair, Program Chair, and President.

The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism is a welcoming, supportive community, founded in 1967, for secular Jews and their families to affirm, celebrate, and enrich Jewish identity and values. Humanistic Jews believe in personal responsibility to fulfill the Jewish ideals of loving-kindness, justice, and good deeds. Humanistic Judaism is a recognized branch of Judaism, active worldwide.

Jewish and Interfaith families interested in learning about the congregation are invited to attend the Havdalah observance on Saturday August 16. An Open House featuring a shofar demonstration for adults and children will take place Sunday morning September 7. The Congregation has a full program of activities for children based in its Sunday school, with instruction about Jewish history, ethical beliefs, and Jewish holidays – and culminates in preparation for unique Bar/Bat Mitzvoth. The Congregation also offers a varied program for adults featuring meaningful Jewish holiday events, adult education, book and movie groups, men’s and women’s discussion groups and field trips.
