Under the slogan “hear the world one country at a time”, musical director Dianne Wittry put together a diverse and intriguing lineup of well and not-so-well known pieces to take the audience on a trip to a difference country every single night of NSO’s new season. At a press conference at the Norwalk Hilton and Garden Inn, Norwalk, Maestro Wittry was breathless trying to depict the music that will be performed during the 2008-2009 season of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra. “It’s really hard to describe with words a great piece,” was often the line that she used when she was enthusiastically trying to find a way to explain some of the pieces to the gathered journalists and local dignitaries. The new NSO year will be started with a Season Kick-Off Concert at the Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk. The event will precede the first big night from the new season on Saturday, September 27, that will take the audience to Russia with pieces by Prokofiev, Tchaikowsky and Glinka under the banner “From Russia With Love”. The soloist will be the 18-year-old piano prodigy from China Hao Chen Zheng, who, according to maestro Wittry, is a rising star in the music world. The season will continue on December 13, 2008 with a journey to England, featuring the Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut, followed by “Fiesta!” (Spain) in January, Vive La France, USA, La Dolce Vita (Italy) and culminated by the family concert “Opera For All”, which will close the season with a medley of popular arias. Maestro Wittry said that a new initiative by the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra will aim at making its music available to many who can’t physically be at the performances through pod casts, streaming video and other technology available on the Internet. Maestro Wittry also hopes to get the Norwalk Symphony on the road to perform in Wilton, Darien, Westport and other communities beyond the Norwalk city limits. The event was opened by NSO President Allen Raymond, followed by Connecticut State Senator Bob Duff who emphasized the importance of music in the community. Senator Duff said that he himself played the drums, violin and trumpet in school. The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra holds its peformances at the Norwalk Concert Hall at 125 East Avenue in Norwalk.
