Center Director, Roslynne McCarthy, says using iPods, a technology that's near and dear to students, will increase the amount of language practice, both listening and speaking, that students can do. “Teachers can produce podcasts for their students to listen to in class or at home. Students can work on projects, skits, conversations, reading, etc., record them on the iPod and then uploaded them for the teacher. Students can record interviews during our study tours to China, Egypt and Japan, and they can create podcasts for our students in the school. The possibilities are endless.” Executive Director of the Norwalk Education Foundation, Lauren Rosato, says this program is the result of a truly collaborative effort. “The funding for this came about with the help of a parent in the Global Studies program from his employer Hitachi Metals and The Hitachi Foundation. The Norwalk Education Foundation worked with the school and the parent to facilitate the grants and then supplied the funds for teacher training from Apple Computers.” McCarthy says three of the Center’s teachers - one in each language - will implement the program in their classes this year, with full rollout (and lessons-learned) to the rest of the students next year. “The iPods will give us so much flexibility in terms of kinds of learning, both verbal, written and visual, as well as individualized instruction as the teacher can put different lessons on different iPods within the same class. Plus, the kids are gonna love it.” © Copyright by NorwalkPlus.com.
