More recent high school grads; younger students up

Faculty often say that their students seem younger every year. At Norwalk Community College, it’s a fact.

The number of younger students attending NCC is increasing. That’s because more students are enrolling at NCC directly from high school than ever before. This fall, freshly minted high school graduates (i.e. those who earned their high school diplomas in Spring 2008) represent 68.3% of all new students at NCC.

Five years ago, 50 percent of NCC students were 18 to 24 years old. This semester, that age group has swelled to 58 percent.

“More students are coming to NCC straight from high school because people are learning about the solid value of an NCC education,” said NCC President David L. Levinson, Ph.D. “NCC offers excellent instruction in a small-class setting, personalized attention, an impressive number of campus-based activities including clubs, events and guest speakers; and articulation agreements that foster seamless transition from NCC to UConn, the Connecticut State university system and many private institutions.”

President Levinson said another reason for the increase is that families are recognizing the economic benefits of attending NCC for two years and transferring to a four-year institution. Annual tuition at NCC is approximately $2,984---a fraction of the cost at public and private colleges and universities which can cost from $22,000 to $52,000 annually.

This semester, NCC’s student body is the biggest ever. A total of 6,266 students are enrolled in credit courses for the Fall 2008 semester. (Enrollment at the same time last year was 6,231.)

In addition, more students are attending NCC full-time. The number of full-time students has risen 8.7 percent. This semester, 2,389 students are attending NCC full-time; and 3,877are enrolled part-time.

Collectively, NCC students are taking a total of 54,282 credit hours this semester.

NCC’s Full-Time Equivalency (FTE) enrollment (3,619 students) is up 3.3 percent over last year FTE is a term which refers to the total number of credit hours taken by students divided by 15. (The assumption is that the average full-time student would take five 3-credit courses totaling 15 credit hours.)

“Nine consecutive semesters of enrollment growth is a significant achievement,” said President Levinson. “NCC is the college of first choice for recent high school grads, people who seek to upgrade their career skills, lifetime learners, and non-native English speakers who seek our extensive English as a Second Language offerings.”
