HARTFORD, May 1 – The Department of Consumer Protection has selected its finalists for its 2008 LAW DAY PHOTO CONTEST, Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. announced today. The finalists are: Leah Pryor of Amity High School in Woodbridge and Molly Weathered of Foran High School in Milford.

“The Department of Consumer Protection works hard to enforce the laws that ensure a fair and equitable marketplace, safe products and services for consumers,” Farrell said. “As we observe America’s 50th Annual Law Day, we thank all of the students who submitted photographs which depict our commitment to protecting Connecticut consumers.” Both finalist entries were images related to the topic of identity theft, Farrell said.

“This is an area of very high importance and interest in today’s technology-driven world,” he said. “The Department of Consumer Protection is a leader in educating consumers about the need to protect their private information and make themselves less vulnerable to identity theft. We have done numerous outreach events on the issue, and are even co-sponsoring a number of free shredding events this weekend to help persons protect themselves by safely disposing of their old and unneeded personal documents.”

Free bulk shredding will be available to the public on Saturday, May 3 from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at:

- Westfield Connecticut Post, Milford
- Enfield Square, Enfield
- Westfield Trumbull
- Capitol & Oak Street Lot, Hartford
- Commuter Lot near DMV, Salem Tpke, Norwich
- Westfield Meriden

Individuals and families are welcome to drive up to the big white and blue “Shred-It” truck at one of the above locations with up ten (10) boxes of unneeded personal papers and watch as they are shredded. There is no cost. The first and second place winner of the DCP Law day Photo Contest will be notified over the weekend and announced by the agency on Monday, Farrell said.
