Hartford – The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) today imposed a 30-day (six-week) unpaid suspension to Tax Operations Unit Supervisor Jason Purslow for violating agency policies regarding the handling of confidential taxpayer information. The action was taken following an extensive administrative investigation of the circumstances surrounding sensitive taxpayer information that was on a laptop computer when it was stolen from Mr. Purslow’s vehicle. Mr. Purslow and his union have agreed not to appeal the suspension.

The agency’s goal in this matter was to impose appropriate and sustainable disciplinary action, while protecting the employee’s legal right to due process. The 30-day suspension is based on the severity of the administrative findings weighed against Mr. Purslow’s superior performance records over many years.

Commissioner Law stated, “First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere apology to the taxpayers affected by this incident. Although we believe the facts show that the employee exhibited a disregard for sensitive data, we concluded that the employee’s actions or inactions did not unequivocally constitute willful neglect, which would have been considered grounds for dismissal.”

Since the laptop was stolen on August 17, DRS has received no evidence to indicate that taxpayer information has been accessed.

Media calls should be directed to the communications office at (860) 297-5610. Taxpayers may visit www.ct.gov or www.ct.gov/drs for more information.
