Film showing Switzerland’s beauty and climber’s inspiring quest opens Oct. 5th

NORWALK, CT (October 2007)—For even the most experienced mountain climbers, the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland offers one of the greatest challenges and provides one of the greatest adventures possible. For climber John Harlin III it offered even more...a chance to come to grips with his personal history and honor the memory of his father who was lost climbing the forbidding Eiger North Face 40 years ago. Join John Harlin III on his inspiring quest and scale the heights of movie enjoyment, as well as the awe-inspiring Eiger, with “The Alps,” the IMAX movie opening October 5th at The Maritime Aquarium’s IMAX Theater. Seen on the sixstory- tall IMAX screen, the amazing footage shot from the same cliffs and peaks the climbers were on makes it feel like you’re climbing the Eiger, too!

“The Alps,” an exciting adventure film for all ages, follows a stirring human story that unfolds in the midst of some of nature’s most awe-inspiring scenery. Learn about the geology of the Alps from Swiss professor Bruno Messerli and the science of snow and avalanches from scientist Christine Pielmeier. Celebrate both the unsurpassed beauty of the Alps and the indomitable spirit of the people who live, climb and explore there. In “The Alps” viewers get an unprecedented tour complete with a ride on the high-altitude Glacier Express train, stops in enchanting mountain villages, a bungee jump off Verzasca Dam, and the rare chance to vicariously experience a triumphant ascent of the feared and revered Eiger North Face.

At the very heart of the film is climber John Harlin III’s ascent of the storied Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, 10 N. Water St., Norwalk, CT 06854 203-852-0700 • www.maritimeaquarium.org

North Face of the Eiger, one of the world’s most celebrated peaks but also one notorious among climbers for the unpredictable weather and the crumbly stone that can cause deadly showers of falling rock. Harlin was just nine years old when his father, famed alpinist John Harlin II, fell 4,000 feet while attempting to pioneer a bold new route straight up the Eiger’s 6,000 foot North Face. Forty years later, his son will honor his memory on a climb that is much more than simply a physical achievement. In a climb where John Harlin III comes face to face with his inner demons, he also follows in his father’s footsteps by exploring why his father came to love the Alps and its culture, people and endles ways of inspiring the human imagination, and he gives that knowledge to his young daughter.

“The Eiger held a part of my soul captive for forty years, and with this trip I was able to set myself free,” says John Harlin III of his achievement. “I always felt I had to do this climb, and yet the thing that I really came back with is that it’s my family that is the most important thing to me. Having climbed the Eiger North Face, I can now revel in spending time with my family more than ever.”From October 5, 2007 through January 17, 2008 “The Alps” will be shown daily at 11 a.m. and 1 & 3 p.m, as well as 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday in The Maritime Aquarium’s IMAX Theater. “Tropical Rainforest” will be shown daily at noon and 2p.m.

The opening of “The Alps” on October 5th is part of The Maritime Aquarium’s “Month of Thrills.” Visitors to the Aquarium this October also won’t want to miss “Funhouse Express 3-D”—an exciting andwacky ride that joins the “SpongeBob Square Pants 4-D” ride in the “Adventure Under the Sea” exhibit— and other awesome special events.
