Attorney General issues final call for New York officials to reject Broadwater

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal – at a rally today against Broadwater – issued a final call to the New York Department of State (DOS) to reject Broadwater, and released his most recent letter to New York Gov. David Patterson.

The New York DOS is expected to make a decision on its Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) concerning Broadwater by Friday. This permission is one of three approvals that Broadwater needs to move forward.

Blumenthal also stated that his office has engaged in constructive, productive discussions with the New York governor’s top staff.

“We’re sending a shout across the Sound to New York: join our fight to sink Broadwater and seek sane, safer alternatives,” Blumenthal said. “My most recent letter to Governor Patterson says our court battle will bar Broadwater while better projects are built. We will straitjacket Broadwater for years, even decades, as we fight in every court and agency; all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a matter of public interest, this result is appropriate, as virtually every alternative is strongly preferable to Broadwater in terms of public safety, environmental protection, navigation, and quality of life.

“Broadwater blatantly violates New York’s own law – its Coastal Zone Management Plan – and it is a security and environmental catastrophe waiting to happen. It threatens both sides of the Sound, and Connecticut must protect both if necessary.”

“New York needs additional supplies of natural gas, and there are several alternative projects that already offer safer supply sources without disastrous environmental, safety and aesthetic impacts. I expect that New York will make the correct, common sense decision this week and reject Broadwater.”
