Westport Country Playhouse (Joanne Woodward and Anne Keefe, artistic directors, and Jodi Schoenbrun Carter, managing director) will present a Sunday Symposium on “The Life and Times of Cole Porter” following the Sunday, June 15, 3 p.m. matinee performance of the musical “Hot ‘n Cole: A Cole Porter Celebration!”

Sunday Symposium speakers will be Gail Miller Armondino, musicologist and soprano, and Shirley Kaplan, playwright, director and designer.

The Playhouse Sunday Symposium program, free and open to the public, provides the audience with guest speakers’ in-depth insights and observations about the production, followed by an interactive dialogue. Debra Baron, Westport Country Playhouse education director, will moderate the Sunday Symposium. It is open to all, including those who attend a performance of “Hot ‘n Cole” at another time. The Sunday Symposium is supported, in part, by the White Barn Program of the Lucille Lortel Foundation.

A lively song and dance revue, “Hot ‘n Cole: A Cole Porter Celebration!” will be directed by two-time Tony Award-winner, film star and Weston resident James Naughton. “Hot ‘n Cole” celebrates the life of one of the great songwriting masters in American musical history. Cole Porter is known for his gigantic Broadway hits, “Anything Goes” and “Kiss Me, Kate,” and for creating many American standards. “Hot ‘n Cole” will play June 10 through June 28.

Musicologist and soprano Gail Miller Armondino decided to study music once she accepted the fact that she would probably never be a designated hitter for the Cleveland Indians, her hometown team. In 2000 she was awarded her Ph.D. in musicology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. While she is still waiting for the royalties from her dissertation on the Opéra-Comique to pour in, allowing her early retirement, she has worked at Carnegie Hall, the American Classical Orchestra, and is now a freelance arts-in-education consultant. She lives in Stamford with her husband, twin boys, and two dogs, all of whom are very musical.

Shirley Kaplan is a playwright, director and designer with productions throughout the U.S. and Europe. She is co-founder of the Obie Award-winning Paper Bag Players and founder of The Painters’ Theatre. She is the writer/lyricist of “Rockabye,” a documentary for the March of Dimes, which was the winner of the Golden Camera Award, U.S. Industrial Film and Video Festival. Currently a faculty member and director of theater outreach at Sarah Lawrence College, Ms. Kaplan is the recipient of the Westchester Arts Council Award in Education 2003 and The Excellence Award from the Ensemble Studio Theatre (2003). She is a former Westport Country Playhouse intern.

“Hot ‘n Cole” is sponsored by U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management and Cohen and Wolf, P.C., Attorneys at Law, with board of trustees sponsors Barbara and John Samuelson and Sharon Sullivan and Jeff Kindler. The Playhouse is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization.

Single tickets range from $30 to $55; opening night tickets, including post-performance reception, are $65. Students and educators are eligible for 50% discounts. There are also flex plans available for multi-ticket purchases. Groups of 10 or more save up to 30% off the regular ticket price. For group sales information call (203) 227-5137, x120.

Celebrating its 78th season, the venerable Westport Country Playhouse (Joanne Woodward and Anne Keefe, Artistic Directors; Jodi Schoenbrun Carter, Managing Director) is creating innovative new works and dynamic revivals. The Playhouse has produced more than 700 plays, 36 of which later transferred to Broadway including “Come Back, Little Sheba” with Shirley Booth; “The Trip to Bountiful” with Lillian Gish; “Butterflies Are Free” with Keir Dullea and Blythe Danner; “Absurd Person Singular” with Sandy Dennis, Geraldine Page and Tony Roberts; and “Our Town” with Paul Newman. The list of actors, directors, and other theatre artists who have worked and continue to perform on the Playhouse’s legendary stage reads like a "Who's Who" of the American theatre. Following a multi-million dollar renovation completed in 2005, the Playhouse now produces year-round, welcoming 85,000 audience members annually. In addition to a full season of theatrical productions, the Playhouse presents educational programming and workshops; a children’s theatre series; symposiums; music; films; and readings of short fiction, classical works and new plays. Westport Country Playhouse serves as a treasured home for the theatrical arts, its audiences and its artists. For the State of Connecticut, it is a true cultural landmark.
