An innovative production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, set in Las Vegas no less, is coming to The Ridgefield Playhouse from the Met: Live in HD on Sunday, February 17, at 1 p.m. & 6 p.m. starring Piotr Beczala, Želijko Lucic and Diana Damrau. An innovative production of Verdi’s Rigoletto is coming to The Ridgefield Playhouse from the Met: Live in HD on Sunday, February 17, at 1 p.m. & 6 p.m. starring Piotr Beczala, Želijko Kucic and Diana Damrau. Director Michael Mayer has placed Verdi's towering tragedy in Las Vegas in 1960 -- an ideal setting for this eternal conflict of depravity and innocence. Inspired by the antics of the Rat Pack, Piotr Beczala is the womanizing Duke of Mantua; Lucic is his tragic sidekick, Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto's daughter, Gilda. Special opera $45 prix-fixe menus are available at Bernard’s (22 West Lane, Ridgefield); reservations are suggested. This event is underwritten by Liz and Steven Goldstone and sponsored by WMNR Fine Arts Radio with support from Starbucks ® Coffee.

In this innovative rethinking of what Verdi had in mind when he wrote Rigoletto, a casino is the Duke's palace. An elevator is used instead of a ladder against a garden wall. A seedy sex club on the outskirts of town stands for the inn. Electric lights resemble the neon of The Strip.

The Ridgefield Playhouse is a not-for-profit performing arts center located at 80 East Ridge, parallel to Main Street, Ridgefield, CT.
