It is rare for an American to play at the National Theatre in London, arguably the largest operation of its kind in the world with three theaters in constant use year-round. On Saturday, February 3, at 6:30 p.m., one of National’s current plays, The Magistrate, starring Academy Award nominee and Tony Award-winner John Lithgow, will be broadcast live in HD to The Ridgefield Playhouse as the second production in a new Playhouse series from London’s National Theatre Live in HD, the best of British theatre. This event is supported by Starbucks Coffee with media sponsor WSHU.

Here is the plot: With his disreputable air and a developed taste for smoking, gambling, alcohol and women, it's hard to believe Cis Farringdon is only fourteen. And that's because he isn't. Agatha, his mother (Olivier Award-winner Nancy Carroll, After the Dance), dropped five years from her true age – and her son’s – when she married amiable magistrate Posket (John Lithgow) who is not aware of the deception. When Agatha’s lie is going to be revealed, it sparks a series of hilarious indignities and outrageous mishaps.

Academy Award nominee and Tony Award-winner, the versatile John Lithgow (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Shrek, 3rd Rock from the Sun), takes the title role in Arthur Wing Pinero’s uproarious Victorian farce, directed by Olivier Award-winner Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You and Into the Woods, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London). The Magistrate is sure to have audiences doubled up with laughter.

The next two NTL events are People on Sunday, April 21, and This House on Saturday, June 22.

For tickets ($25 adults, $20 seniors/members, $15 students, $18 each for all 4 NTL events), call the box office at (203) 438-5795, or order online at ridgefieldplayhouse.org. The Ridgefield Playhouse is a not-for-profit performing arts center located at 80 East Ridge, parallel to Main Street, Ridgefield, CT.
