Sugar plum fairies, a bigger-than-life Christmas tree, toys that come to life and sing and dance to magical musical scores. This is The Nutcracker ballet by Tchaikovsky coming to The Ridgefield Playhouse on Saturday, December 8, at 2 & 6 p.m., and on Sunday, December 9, at 2 p.m. The Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance presents a dazzling cast including their talented dancers and guest artists. Children and adults alike will be inspired as little Clara’s dream continues to inspire young and old alike capturing the wonder and child-like joy of the season.

There will be holiday refreshments in the lobby -- ginger & spice and everything nice. Piccolo Pizza & Jazzeria (24 Prospect St., Ridgefield) is offering a free scoop of gelato the day of the show when tickets/stubs are presented. This show is part of the Pepsi Children’s Series and is sponsored by Whistle Stop Bakery with media sponsor Star 99.9fm. The Union Savings Bank “Arts for Everyone” recipient is Danbury Grass Roots Tennis.

The Nutcracker has become a Playhouse tradition for people of all ages. The Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance’s fresh production will feature exquisite costumes and enchanting choreography. The Conservatory’s Emily Robertson will reprise her role of Clara, the beloved Niece of Drosselmeyer, the godfather/magician who gives her the magical Nutcracker. Herr Drosselmeyer will be danced by the Nutcracker’s Artistic Director and Co- Director of the Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, Terence Duncan. Margaux Amara and Meredith Santoro will share the roles of the Dew Drop Fairy and the Sugar Plum Fairy, partnered by the guest Cavalier Matthew Melendez from the Hartt School Dance Division at the University of Hartford. First Selectman for the Town of Ridgefield, Rudy Marconi, will once again appear in the party scene joined by Ridgefield Conservatory faculty Amy Piantaggini and Maggie Ronan. The role of the Snow Queen will be danced by Mattie Joyner and Daniella Parisot partnered by Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance alumnus Isaac Lerner. Mattie Joyner's father, the renowned internationally acclaimed tenor William Joyner, will also join the cast as a party guest.

Tchaikovsky’s ballet adaptation of the story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffman was originally staged in 1892 and is as popular and relevant as ever. The masterful music swells as the dancers grace the stage and delight the audience.
