“ For the past 5 years, Fairfield Museum and History Center, which created the concept for Our Nation’s Generations, a collaborative learning project that brings together students from diverse backgrounds to develop their own exhibition at the Museum, has coordinated the joint effort between schools,” Jewell explained. “This year’s theme, American Roots was inspired by the Fairfield Museum’s current exhibition, Promise of Freedom: The Emancipation Proclamation and students explored the question, ‘What does it mean to be an American?’ through tours of exhibits at the Fairfield Museum and the Aldrich Museum in Ridgefield, Conn. This project encourages students’ understanding of their family, community history and their own unique place in the world. This 2013 project pairs 8th grade students from The Unquowa School (Fairfield) and New Beginnings Family Academy (Bridgeport). The students worked together on historical research, reading literature, writing speeches and developing arts-based activities. The project encourages a broad understanding of freedom, equality and citizenship, Jewell added. © Copyright by NorwalkPlus.com.
