The film brings Mick & the boys back to the Aquarium for a long-awaited encore to the highly popular “Rolling Stones: At the Max,” which rocked the six-story screen in 1991 (as well as in several return engagements). Filmed at Manhattan’s famed Beacon Theatre in 2006 during the band’s “A Bigger Bang” tour, “Shine A Light” features more than 20 classic Stones songs, and includes guest appearances by Christina Aguilera, blues legend Buddy Guy and White Stripes guitarist Jack White. The film also integrates rarely seen archival footage of the Stones – singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood, and drummer Charlie Watts – for a unique cinema experience. “Mick Jagger still has more energy than people half his age,” said Marcia Bittner, marketing director of The Maritime Aquarium. “And the band sounds as good as always. Other than attending a live show, there’s really no better way to see Mick Jagger than 60 feet tall on our IMAX screen. IMAX brightness, clarity and sheer size let Scorsese’s famous cinematography skills shine in full brilliance.” But movies in the IMAX format are more than just a visual experience. The Aquarium theater’s 10,000-watt proprietary digital surround-sound system makes it sound like you’re in the front row of a live Stones show, she added. What’s even more of a gas-gas-gas is that The Maritime Aquarium is opening “Shine A Light” on the day of its national release. You will be able to see it big in IMAX the same date it is released to smaller screens, Bittner said. “Paramount Studios gave clearance for the Aquarium to open this film in our IMAX theater, based in part on our spectacular performance with the previous ‘At the Max’ concert film,” said Robert Griesmer, the Aquarium’s chief operating officer. Scorsese, an Academy Award-winner for “The Departed” and director of such classics as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull” and “Goodfellas,” of course is no stranger to rock documentaries. He edited “Woodstock” (1970) and directed one of the most famous rock films of all time, “The Last Waltz” (1978), chronicling The Band’s last concert. Hollywood Reporter’s Kirk Honeycutt wrote, “Scorsese and an all-star cinematography crew capture the very essence of the Stones in performance – the raw energy, slick musicianship, easy rapport with audiences and the way their individual personas have grown into appealing caricatures of their former bad-boy selves. Scorsese has cameras everywhere, with seemingly half of the American Society of Cinematographers membership . . . manning those cameras.” Variety critic Todd McCarthy wrote, “The evolution of the Rolling Stones’ reputation – from rock ’n’ roll’s bad boys to its most beloved and resilient granddaddies – is plain to see in ‘Shine a Light.’ Martin Scorsese’s energetic account . . . takes full advantage of heavy camera coverage and top-notch sound to create an invigorating musical trip down memory lane, as well as to provoke gentle musings on the wages of aging and the passage of time.” The 122-minute film is rated PG-13 for language, drug references and smoking (tobacco). On its opening weekend (April 4-6), “Shine A Light” will rock each day at The Maritime Aquarium for 3, 5:30, 8 & 10:30 p.m. shows. After that, the film plays daily through May 22, initially with three or four shows each weekend afternoon & evening and two shows each weekday evening. Times will vary week-to-week. Tickets for “Shine A Light” are $11.50 for adults, $10.50 for seniors (age 65+) and $9.50 for children (ages 2 – 12). Aquarium members save $1.
