In addition to his fame as a gifted songwriter/singer, Rundgren is at the core a rock & roll maverick. At the beginning of the third decade of his career, Rundgren concentrated on behind-the-scenes innovations, whereas in the ’70s and ‘80s, he maintained a relentless public work schedule. He released up to two albums a year either as a solo artist or with his band Utopia, while producing acclaimed records for artists as diverse as Meatloaf, Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad and XTC, supporting the fact that Rundgren’s music stretches into a variety of styles. This approach to his career won him a zealous fan base. In the twenty years following the mass appeal he experienced in the ‘70s, Todd Rundgren may have existed largely on the fringe of pop music, but he produced a body of work that ranks as one of the most intriguing in rock & roll.
