An original historic tragicomedy written by Marina Neary and directed by Diane LaSala premiers in Old Greenwich on October 24, 2008. The play features the adventures of the French novelist in England during the Crimean War and the inspiration behind “Les Miserables” and other masterpieces of the exile era.
Marina Neary is an award-winning multilingual journalist who studied Hugo’s works in depth for over a decade. Neary states: “We want to build on the popularity of Les Miserables and resurrect Hugo’s less familiar works that are also referenced in this play. The story and characters will appeal to a broad audience.” Diane LaSala is a musical theater veteran, who has produced and directed numerous plays.
The script has received excellent reviews from actors, directors and literary professors. A French dramatist, Eric Bertrand states: “The idea of giving the spectator a chance to follow Hugo through London, towards the people of the abyss is brilliant. It deepens the work of an author who, like his most impressive characters, manages to look through the other side of reality and through the mask of Society, Love and human nature.”
The cast includes local theater veterans such as Ted Yudain of Curtain Call as well as fresh talent from various parts of CT and NY. The production opens in at the theater of the First Congregational Church of Greenwich, located at 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT 06870.
