Emilio and the Enchanted Cow
Westport Country Playhouse (Joanne Woodward, Anne Keefe, artistic directors, Jodi Schoenbrun Carter, managing director) will present puppets and music in “Emilio and the Enchanted Cow,” a Marionetas de la Esquina production, on Sunday, September 7, 1 and 4 p.m., as part of the Playhouse’s “Family Festivities” series. The show is for ages five and up; running time is approximately one-hour. Birthday party facilities may be scheduled in advance.

Pre-show activity, beginning one hour before the performance at noon and 3 p.m., will feature puppet-making with a teaching artist.

“Emilio and the Enchanted Cow” tells of young Emilio, who fears the changes that resulted from his parents’ separation. He is faced with going to a new school, trying to make new friends and living in a new home without his father. Emilio focuses on what he likes to do best – draw. And when the cow that he has drawn magically comes to life, Emilio finds the courage, and some new friends, to help him though this tough time.

Mexico’s renowned puppet theatre company Marionetas de la Esquina uses colorful puppets, music and humor to stage charming and hopeful stories. They have been entertaining children and adults alike since 1975. They perform their shows in English and in Spanish and have given more than 11,000 performances. In 2006, Company member and playwright Amaranta Leyva received the Mexican National Prize for Children’s Theater. Also in 2006, the Company received an award from the National Critics of Mexico.

Upcoming Family Festivities at Westport Country Playhouse include “Madeline and the Bad Hat,” an original musical capturing the carefree touching spirit of Ludwig Bemelmans’ Madeleine, on Sunday, November 9, 1 and 4 p.m.; “Rebecca Frezza and Big Truck,” winner of over 10 major children’s music awards and seen on PBS’ “Kids and Noggin,” on Sunday January 11, 1 and 4 p.m.; “Dr. Dolittle,” presented by Sign Stage on Tour, Sunday, February 1, 1 and 4 p.m.; and “Seussical,” presented by TheatreworksUSA, Sunday, March 15, 1 and 4 p.m.

Also, in a free-of-charge by reservation Hollow’s Day Event, JuggleJoy and their bags of tickets and treats will be on the Playhouse stage, Sunday, October 26, 1 p.m. Tobasco Peppar and Felicity Fussenbother will star in this fun-filled-not-too-scary special Halloween show with spinning plates, disappearing (and reappearing) clowns, balancing on the handlebars of a unicycle, magic tricks, juggling and silly fun, including a costume parade for ages 2 – 7.
