Marc Cohn, winner of the 1991 Grammy® award for Best new Artist who produced “Walking in Memphis” and “True Companion” has been obsessed with music as long as he can remember. Influenced by the timeless songs of the 70s from The Beatles, Bacharach, Ray Charles and Motown, Cohn doesn’t merely recreate the sounds of this storied time in musical history, he transforms the songs into tracks that are warm, soulful, sexy and easy-going.
On Saturday, July 24, at 7 p.m., The Ridgefield Playhouse presents singer Marc Cohn who will recreate some of the most popular sounds of Bread, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Smokey Robinson and Cat Stevens with inspired renditions. Dinner will be available to purchase in the lobby at 6 p.m. This event is part of The Doyle Coffin Architecture Singer/Songwriter Series. A limited number of Gold Circle tickets which include a pre-show meet & greet are available by calling the box office at 203-438-5795.
There is something to be said and admired about someone who writes original songs, and Marc Cohn’s composing and vocal abilities have won him a legion of fans who revel in his live performances. His style is marked by his lilting baritone voice. Marc Cohn is known as a musician's musician and is categorized as a pop artist, although his music skirts the popular folk tradition of earlier decades.
“I was hooked [on pop music] from day one,” enthuses Cohn.
He was only 12 years old in 1970, but for this Grammy® award-winning songwriter of the hit “Walking in Memphis”, that year has significant meaning. For his new album, Listening Booth: 1970 (being released this month), the storyteller becomes interpretive singer as he dives back into his childhood musical influences and surfaces with new versions of songs. Cohn worked for weeks with producer John Leventhal (Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin) to come up with songs "that we could not only do justice to, but could also put our own personal stamp on”. The extensive song list features Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", Cat Stevens' "Wild World", Bread's "Make It With You” and Badfinger's "No Matter What".
