A public performance May 9 (Friday) at Eastern Middle School (21Hendricks Ave.) in Riverside , featuring martial arts and dance workshops at 4:30 p.m. and a stage presentation at 7 p.m., completes the tour. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and children. Ticket information is available online at www.creativeconnections.org. The itinerary also covers the Stepping Stones Museum in Norwalk May 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Parkway School in Greenwich May 5, Jefferson Elementary School in Norwalk (underwritten by GE Financial) May 6, Unquowa School in Fairfield May 7 and Harrison Street School in Harrison, NY May 8. In the troupe are 19 talented performers between the ages of 10 and 12 accompanied by seven teachers, representing the Peking University Primary School in Beijing . They are staying in Greenwich at the homes of Parkway School students. At each location, in addition to performing the troupe conducts 4:30 p.m. workshops in the Chinese legacy of dance, martial arts and knot-tying, visits classrooms, engages in cross-cultural dialogue and lunches with the American students.
The troupe’s blend of costumed folk drama, dance, music, comedy and martial arts has enthralled audiences in Austria , France , Russia , Singapore and New Zealand . Prior to the Connecticut appearances, the troupe is also performing at Glen Cove ’s Public Schools on Long Island April 30-May 3. Creative Connections is a nonprofit cultural exchange organization that has previously booked youth performance tours by groups from India , Russia , Ireland , Colombia and Uganda and has partnered U.S. students with their counterparts in 45 countries, opening their eyes to the cultural riches of the world. Teachers and parents declare the international tours and other activities help to broaden the cultural perspectives of the students here and abroad. “Bright talented kids,” one teacher reported, “are great global ambassadors.” In addition to arranging dance tours, Creative Connections promotes understanding through interactions such as ArtLink, the Rainforest Exchange, MusicLink and teleconferencing between classrooms.
