Ridership up 8% in 2008 at One of America’s Fastest Growing Companies

The ownership baton of privately-held Teddy’s Transportation System, Inc., a global ground transportation company based in Norwalk, CT, has been passed to the next generation. Leading the company will be President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Wisniewski and Vice Presidents Linda Bento and Ted Wisniewski. The trio has been in top management at the firm for decades. Charles, an industry leader and standards watchdog, was named president of Teddy’s in 1990.

In 1978 their parents, Shelly and Ted Wisniewski, purchased Teddy’s Taxi in Westport, along with the Westport Avis franchise and livery plates for the limousine business; in the beginning there was one limousine and one town car. The taxi business and rental franchise were sold in 1984 so the family could concentrate on the rapidly growing Fairfield County corporate market for chauffeured ground transportation services.

“Cultivating long-term relationships with our customers and with our outstanding staff has been very important in this 24/7 business,” Mrs. Wisniewski observed. “The personalized service we provided to corporations such as Glendinning Company and Richardson Vicks contributed to our growth, as their former employees moved to other companies in the region and told fellow road warriors about their positive experience with Teddy’s,” she said. “In stepping aside, I have great confidence, not only in my children, but in the entire team here at Teddy’s,” she added.

“We are excited about our new partnership and are looking forward to building on the solid business foundation our parents created,” remarked Charles Wisniewski, a past president of the National Limousine Association and a founder of the Limousine Operators of Connecticut. He has been with the company since 1978. “New technologies, from cell phones and the Internet to GPS, have revolutionized our business. Today we are able to offer online booking, pinpoint the exact location of a passenger’s vehicle in real time, and implement innovative solutions that help corporate purchasers manage a worldwide transportation budget,” he said.

“Road warriors know there is often a vast difference in service levels across livery providers. As corporations look for ways to cut travel expenses, they know they can look to us for reliability, professionalism and safety, as well as cost efficiency. We are able to respond aggressively and successfully to the RFP process and still consistently deliver the prompt, courteous service for which we are known,” he added.

Over the past three decades, the family has weathered three recessions, and it expects to continue to be profitable during the current one, the new owners agreed. Pre-approved credit card processing has virtually replaced paper billing and all but eliminated concern about receivables in an economic slowdown, observed Mrs. Bento, who oversees accounting procedures. Although current problems in the automotive industry may impact vehicle availability, the growing emphasis on fuel economy will undoubtedly be beneficial, noted Ted Wisniewski, who oversees fleet management and reservations.

Ridership at Teddy’s was up 8% last year, and with a fleet of 35 vehicles (including two hybrid executive sedans), the company currently ranks as one of the largest chauffeured ground transportation providers in the county. Sales growth over the recent past earned Teddy’s a place on Inc. magazine’s list of America’s Fastest Growing Companies in 2007 and again in 2008. In 2007 Teddy’s ranked as a Finalist in Limo Digest’s Operator of the Year competition and was honored as one of the top 3 large fleet operators nationwide; Teddy’s was also recognized as a Finalist in the 2007 Connecticut Family Business of the Year competition.

Founded in 1932, Teddy’s Transportation System, Inc. is one of the top 50 ground transportation companies in the U.S. today. Teddy’s has redefined “professional transportation solutions” by forging a strategic network of premium global partnerships and utilizing innovative technology that provides corporate purchasers, event planners and travelers with access to immediate, real-time information. Teddy’s commitment to excellence ensures reliability, efficiency and comfort, which translates into the most productive mode of transportation available, as well as value for its clients.
