Whether you are just starting out as an aspiring artist or looking to pick up those paint brushes that you haven’t touched in years, or maybe you are an experienced artist seeking new creative challenges, the Silvermine School of Art located in New Canaan has a course for you.

The School Open House on Sunday, September 12th from 2pm to 4pm is a great opportunity to meet faculty members, see demonstrations and check out the more than 100 courses that will be offered during the fall semester. The term, beginning on September 20th, offers classes for all ages, from 2 to 92. In addition to the 12 week courses available, there are a variety of one and two day workshops that can fit the busiest of schedules providing excellent options with which to try something new and different.

There are some exciting new courses being offered this semester in all media ranging from bronze sculpting, to creative writing and lithography printmaking. If you love to write or are a wannabe writer, then the four week course Stop Talking About it: Just Write is the one for you. A highly motivational course designed to jump-start individuals who have ideas, but have not been able to get started or to see them through. This class appeals to people who have great ideas for websites, books, magazines and newspaper articles, but cannot seem to find the time or mental energy to get started. The Art of Stained Glass explores the historical, spiritual and ethnic sources of the fine art form of stained glass. Through demonstration and hands-on participation students will create several pieces of work and learn the meaning of the colors used, tools, and techniques of this historic medium.

If Bronze Casting is your thing this is a great opportunity to work in Silvermine’s refurbished foundry where you will prepare a wax object, create the mold and cast sculptural pieces in bronze. The day of casting will be an all-day pouring party with invited guests! Lithography printmaking offers an in-depth study of the technical and visual aspects of lithography. Explore a variety of techniques in a collaborative atmosphere with special attention given to the students’ personal expression and how it translates within the medium.

There are many returning favorite courses such as Altered Books, a six week course where students will create a new and unique piece of art by transforming an old or discarded book working from personal history, series of imagery, or flight of fantasy. For the beginning artist, there is Drawing for the Absolute and Utter Beginner. This foundation course introduces the absolute beginning artist who has had no previous training to the basic techniques and concepts of drawing. And for the more experienced artist there is Advanced Landscape/Still Life Painting where students working with oil, will paint outside on location or with a still life set up in the studio, to help develop their own methods and styles.

If your day to day life is too jam packed and your time does not lend itself to taking a 12 week course, there are a wide range of workshops available at most any time weekdays, evenings and on the weekends. For the intermediate or advanced painter, visiting artist Jerry Weiss will be offering a special three day workshop on Landscape Painting where students will begin drawing then proceed to address painterly issues of value and color in the landscape. And then there is a one day workshop being offered with Suzanne Benton, Storytelling through Masks, where participants will create a unique mask using a variety of media. Do you love to travel and find yourself flipping through travel magazines thinking that you could have written one of those travel articles? Then The World According to you: Writing about Travel with Suzanne Farewell is the workshop for you.

For those who are into photography, there is Photography Shooting Field Trip. These one day shooting field trips are opportunities for digital or film photographers to gain confidence in their image-making skills with instructor Bruce Dunbar at hand.

Whether you are five or 15, there are many courses open to developing artists. Things that Fly in the Sky with Karen Siegel is a wonderful opportunity for the youngest artists to explore amazing creatures that fly….while listening to the extraordinary musical sounds of nature. For the budding artist, working directly from life lays the groundwork for creating rendered imagery as well as broadening the imagination. Youth Foundation Drawing with Inez Andrucyk is the class to take. Portfolio Development is a serious portfolio development course for teenagers allowing students to create a group of well-executed works of art to be used for college admission. Many of the art school portfolio assignments (self-portraits, portraits, figure drawings and paintings) will be done in class.

The options are endless at Silvermine School of Art, and open to everyone of all ages and skills. A free catalogue is available from the school: (203): 966-6668 ext. 2 or visit the website at www.silvermineart.org.
