Saturday, 22 November, 2008 - “Festival of Lighthouses” Exhibit at Maritime Aquarium

More than 20 model lighthouses brighten up the holidays at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, as local artists vie for $$2,200 in prizes. Top prize is $$1,000. Artisans, hobbyists, clubs, schools, families and amateurs have built past lighthouses. You decide who wins. From Nov. 15 to Jan. 19, lighthouses are displayed throughout the Aquarium’s galleries and exhibits. Each visitor gets a ballot to vote for his or her favorite. Last year more than 8,000 votes were tallied. What constitutes a lighthouse is up to the artist. Contest rules are very liberal, basically limiting models to a three-foot base and a height from three to six feet and requiring a working beacon light. Previous entries have ranged from highly detailed scale models of actual lighthouses to abstract sculptures. Show runs Nov. 15 to Jan 19. Included with Aquarium admission.

Artifact Design Group, the area’s premier source of exceptionally crafted custom furniture will feature a unique pairing of art furniture and specially selected table-sized original works of art. More than 20 works compiled by browngrotta arts of ceramic, fiber, metal and glass will grace a series of furniture pieces designed by Artifact Design.

Saturday, 22 November, 2008 - Ann’s Place Festival of Trees

Ann’s Place, the largest support organization for cancer patients and their families in the Danbury region, has announced plans for its 2008 Festival of Trees, to be held November 21-23 at the Danbury Plaza Hotel.

This is the sixth year for the popular fund-raising event, which features the auction of a dazzling array of custom-decorated holiday trees sponsored by area businesses, groups and individuals. Sponsors may choose a theme for their tree and decorate it themselves or have the decorating done by expert volunteers. The festival also includes the sale of donated quilts, wreaths and other hand-crafted holiday gifts.

In addition, this year’s festival will also feature Tea Parties for youngsters, a LEGO competition for students and a Cabaret evening of dining and ballroom dancing for adults. 

Additional festival events designed for all members of the family, include:

* The LEGO Artists Challenge, for students K-12, on Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. “Legomaniacs” can bring their LEGO creations and compete for valuable prizes. Fee is $$15 per entry.

* CABARET, an evening of dining, dancing and ballroom entertainment for adults, featuring professional dancers Martin and Desiree Smith and Antonio the Dancing DJ, on Saturday from 6:30 to 11:00 pm. Admission is $$125 per person.

* My Friend & Me Teas, for children ages three and up accompanied by an adult, on Sunday at 12 noon and 2:00 pm. Tea Party admission is $$15.

Gale Zucker will present her book Shear Spirit: Ten Fiber Farms, Twenty Patterns, and Miles of Yarn.  Zucker is an award-winning location photographer and avid knitter. Her work has appeared in books, advertising, and magazines, and her portraits and feature stories appear frequently in Smithsonian, Newsweek, Yankee, and the New York Times Magazine.

Saturday, 22 November, 2008 - “Photo Collages” - Super Saturday Series at Westport Arts Center

The Westport Arts Center announces its 2008 Fall art programs for children ages five to twelve.  Through interactive classes students will directly experience works of contemporary art, personal observations, and gain a deeper appreciation for art and its multiple meanings and interpretations.

The Super Saturday Series offers a complement of creative art-making and educational activities for children in kindergarten through 4th grade.  Students can participate in any of the themed workshops, which give kids the opportunity to use a wide range of materials to execute their imaginative creations.

On November 22, kids will create a collage of memories through the technique of scrapbooking in “Photo Collages.”

Craft USA celebrates craft as art. It is recognized as an exhibit of merit where original works of art made by hand are showcased. This is the sixth year of the juried craft triennial competition/exhibition. The competition draws over 1000 entries and over 400 artists from coast to coast working in various mediums such as ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, paper, wood, basketry and mixed media.

This year’s juror is Gretchen Keyworth, Director of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. A notable figure in the world of contemporary craft, she has extensive experience in curating and advising prominent craft shows. The Fuller Craft Museum underwent a re-branding in 2004/05 to become the preeminent craft museum in New England. The museum has recently exhibited Joan Morris, Thomas Mann, Megumi Naitoh, Carter Smith, and Alan Klein. Ms. Keyworth has independently curated many craft exhibitions such as GlassForms, Charles Kaziun Early Works and Traditional Paperweights. In 2005, Ms. Keyworth was named one of ten people to watch in American Craft by The Crafts Report.

Saturday, 22 November, 2008 - Family Connections: Telling Our Stories Through Heirlooms at Fairfield Museum

Heirlooms give us a glimpse into life at a different time as well as insight into the stories that make our own families unique.  Connections forged through heirlooms are the focus of a new exhibit at the Fairfield Museum and History Center entitled, Family Connections: Telling Our Stories Through Heirlooms. The exhibit features cherished pieces that show how people create and preserve links between themselves, their ancestors and descendants through objects.  Textiles, jewelry, samplers, books, silver, and toys will be on display, each with its own unique history. 

The Fairfield Museum is presenting a number of exciting programs that relate to the exhibit. Family First Sunday programs, held the first Sunday of each month and sponsored by Tauck Tours, creates special opportunities for family bonding; make a special family memory book on October 5, and walk down memory lane with storyteller-in-residence, Lot Therio on November 2.  Grandparents, treat your grandchildren to an afternoon of storytelling on November 11 (grandparents are free of charge). Come to a lecture and show & tell, Keepsakes & Memories, on October 12 to learn how objects can tell wonderful stories of our ancestors with professional genealogist, Virginia Banerjee.  Bring your family’s heirlooms along to tell your story.
