When Jamie Guerrero took over what had been a decrepit old diner, in 1998, he transformed it into a delightful corner of Latin America in Stamford. Dining at Brasitas is like visiting another country for the duration of a meal. The floor tiles and lighting fixtures are from South America, and romantic south-of-the border music enhances the atmosphere. Brasitas has a friendly bar and an extensive wine list that features Spanish, Colombian, Argentine, Portuguese and California wines. The beer list has the best of fine South American brews. A lavish Sunday brunch is served in addition to lunch and dinner, seven days a week. The menu has flourished with favorites drawn from the cuisines of Mexico, the Caribbean, Argentina, El Salvador and Guatemala, adding diversity to the strong Colombian base. Mr. Guerrero is from Colombia. And Brasitas means a charcoal brazier and briquettes. Lunch ranges from simple to sumptuous. You can get a sumptuous appetizer. The ceviche Brasitas is of note — seafood, marinated in citrus — delicious! Or go for a simple trio of empanadas, a burrito or a bowl of soup and/or a salad. The dinner menu is also extensive, with delicious choices that make it worth returning to the restaurant for new experiences or old favorites. At dinner, you’ll find crisp, batter-fried shrimp with a spicy mango dipping sauce, many fish dishes and flavorful Argentine steaks. If you love seafood, try the fish and shellfish casserole. Recently, Brasitas held the first of a series of monthly wine dinners. The menu and wines were chosen by Jamie Guerrero and wine broker Tony Gagliardo, owner of Northeast Wine Brokers of Westport. The two gentlemen tasted the wines, pairing them with dishes from Brasitas’s menu. Michael Sautkulis, owner of Merritt Wines, at 430 Main Avenue in Norwalk, makes the wines available on a retail basis. The wine dinner was a total crowd pleaser. The three — wine merchant Michael Sautkulis, wine broker Tony Gagliardo and restaurateur Jamie Guerrero — will team up for future wine dinners. To be added to their e-mailed list of events, call Merritt Wines, at 203-847-1113. In summation, if you can’t actually eat your way around South and Central America, visit Brasitas for a truly marvelous Latin/Spanish dining experience right in the heart of Stamford.
